Trick 'r Treat: Movie Review

It's that time of the year -- when ghosties and ghoulies go door to door looking for candy.

Also, next Monday is when I start my writing challenge, so check back everyday for a new story. If you have a prompt you are hoping I'll use, comment below with it!

The Movie

Trick 'r Treat is an American horror comedy anthology film released in 2007. Written and directed by Michael Dougherty and starring Dylan Baker, Rochelle Aytes, Anna Paquin, Brian Cox, and more, the movie contains four shorts in a nonlinear narrative, that all occur on the same Halloween night in the fictional town of Warren Valley. The common connection between all the stories is a creepy character wearing a burlap sack and pyjamas.

The stories include a Halloween prank gone wrong, a fed-up school principal, a surprising party in the woods, and a Halloween hating old man's unwelcome visitor.

The Review

I've always been a fan of movies with an anthology format. I feel like these movies avoid the common pacing traps other movies can fall into because the stories are so short and Trick 'r Treat is an excellent example of this. Though the setting and creepy Sam provide a thread that binds all the tales together (also the characters from one story often have cameos in another) each of the stories is unique and just a fun tale overall.

I honestly don't really have complaints about Trick 'r Treat, it is just such an enjoyable film. The movie doesn't rely too heavily on CG, using makeup and costumes to create a sense of the uncanny, which is also refreshing. Add to that a combination of top notch acting, refreshing twists on common tropes, and you have an excellent film anthology to watch this Halloween season!
